JOE STANHOPE, Chair, Nanaimo Regional District

Joe was born in Vancouver and when he was 12 years old his family moved to Parksville.  He worked as an Engineer for the Ministry of Highways in the 1950’s.  In 1960 he moved to Port Alberni where he worked in the forest industry and began to raise a family.  He later was employed by MacMillan Bloedel for 23-years in the forest industry as a logging engineer woods foreman and most notably as their personnel manager.  He was a Director for the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District for four years, and an Alderman for the City of Port Alberni for five years.  In 1986 he became the Government Agent in Port Alberni, where he worked until his retirement in 1996.

Upon retirement he moved back to the family property at French Creek in Parksville and in the same year he was elected as an Electoral Area Director to the Regional District of Nanaimo Board.

As a Regional District of Nanaimo director Joe has served as the Board representative for the Municipal Finance Authority of BC since 1996 and has been the Chairperson of the Regional District of Nanaimo since 2002.
