The AVICC Executive Committee established a number of Strategic Priorities at the start of its term in 2019. One of the priorities was to strengthen the relationship between the local governments and First Nations communities within our geographic boundaries which include Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, qathet, the Central Coast and the North Coast.
In an effort to support and facilitate this relationship-building, President Jensen extended an invitation to 56 First Nations within the AVICC region to join the AVICC. Membership criteria is set out in the AVICC Executive Policies, and is consistent with UBCM membership criteria. AVICC membership is available to first nations that meet the following criteria:
- elected representation;
- ability to tax; and
- ability to exercise regulatory power or provide local services.
Prospective members are asked to provide a resolution from their elected representatives requesting membership, confirm that they meet the criteria as outlined above, and agree to pay the annual membership dues.
AVICC welcomes first nation members to help strengthen the relationships and build trust between all communities.
