Whereas the opioid crisis claimed the lives of more than 2,500 citizens in British Columbia in 2023;

And whereas not all information regarding the distribution of fentanyl precursors is currently being shared by relevant provincial and federal agencies with law enforcement:

Therefore be it resolved that UBCM lobby the Province to work with the relevant authorities to ensure pertinent information relating to the distribution of precursors for fentanyl is shared by relevant provincial and federal agencies with law enforcement in a timely manner.

  • Provincial Response:Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Government is committed to bringing an end to the toxic illicit drug crisis. This includes efforts to support law enforcement partners in addressing the importation and distribution of fentanyl precursors. Our government regularly engages with law enforcement partners and the federal government and its agencies to endorse timely information sharing. We continue to encourage all partners to engage in best efforts to proactively share and seek out information consistent with each agencys individual mandate. We acknowledge and support the Prime Ministerial Directive on Transnational Crime and Border Security issued in August 2025. The Directive references Canadas Border Plan and committed dedicated resources for Public Safety Canada to stand up and operate an information sharing hub between federal, provincial and territorial partners, and international partners, as required, on transnational organized crime, money laundering, drug trafficking, and border security. Government is committed to contributing to the success of this initiative and looks forward to continuing to work with our partners to addressing the toxic illicit drug crisis. As recently announced, the governments of Canada and British Columbia are also collaborating on the creation of a Regional Integrated Drug Enforcement Team through a federal investment of 4 million over four years as part of Canadas Border Plan. This investment will assist in enhancing the coordination of law and border enforcement resources from multiple jurisdictions to address illegal drug production and trafficking.
